Get Rid of Your Unproductive Habits Once and For All

Get rid of your unproductive habits or you will destroy your chance at being successful. How many times have you attempted to make money online or gotten involved in a business opportunity only to throw in the towel after a few weeks or months?

If you can’t seem to get traction in your business, these unproductive habits may be the cause. I’m gonna share with you 10 of the most important habits I’ve had to overcome so that I could move forward in my business:

The Unproductive Habit of Comparing Yourself to Others

Whether you’re starting a new business or trying to learn a new skill, people tend to look at others with a lot more experience and compare themselves to them. You cannot realistically  expect the get the same results immediately for yourself. You didn’t watch their struggle from the beginning. You didn’t see all their mistakes and the many little things they worked to improve on each and every day.  When you compare yourself to others and where they are today, you are naturally going to feel inadequate.

You need to change your focus and look at what you have already accomplished and where you are now compared to last week. Get a clear picture of all the progress you have already made and know that you will move forward with each passing day.

Asking “What if” Questions

If you find yourself asking “What if” questions like, “What happens if I fail?” “What if no one likes me?” “What if I’m not good enough to succeed?” “What if I’m not doing the right thing?” Asking yourself these questions is not going to help you. They will suck all the drive and energy out of you. You need to change your thinking and instead ask yourself, “What do I need to do to make this happen?” “Where do I start?” “Whom can I turn to for help?” Spend your mental energy thinking about these things and find those answers because they will help you succeed.

Waiting for Someone to Give You Permission

You may be waiting around for your family to give approval. You tell yourself that if you can get their “go ahead” that means you’re doing the right thing. You would never want their disapproval or to disappoint them. So you become stuck when don’t get the kind of enthusiasm you hoped for. I can remember so many times my family tried to “protect” me by encouraging me to stick close to home. But the truth is, had I listened I’d still be stuck in the past, living my life for them instead of venturing out and reaching for the stars and being fulfilled. Don’t be trapped in a job you hate, living a life that’s slowly killing your soul. YOU can decide for yourself what’s best. TRUST your instincts and go with your heart. Live YOUR life the way you want, and you can be sure you’ll create one in which you can thrive and be happy.

Holding Off Until the Time is “Right”

It’s easy to put things off, waiting for the “right” time. You make excuses like you need to improve on certain things, get the right experience, and/or learn some new things. You’re waiting for a change in the economy, a change in the weather or for some sign from the universe that the time is right. These thoughts are simply your mind playing games with you. You are telling yourself these things so it’s okay to do nothing, when you really know otherwise. Now is the right time. No one is ever completely ready, but by starting now you will learn along the way and discover what you need to do to keep improving. You need to take the first step, putting one foot in front of the next and just keep going.

Expecting Immediate Results

“What’s happening?” You ask yourself. “I’ve put forth so much time and effort and nothing is happening!” “What’s the point?” “I’m just wasting my time.” I remember so clearly when I thought these things after I posted my very first blog. No one left any comments, not even my friends. I was ready to just give up. No sooner had I started blogging, I was going to stop. Fortunately someone told me to be patient. And now I’m telling you to just keep going, show persistence and allow yourself a reasonable timeline to see results. The last thing you want to do is give up before you’ve really even started!

Taking No Action

You spend your time making lists and formulating plans. You keep going back to the drawing board, rewriting your plans. You talk about your plans, visualize everything happening, second-guess your plans and rework them again and again. You do all this but never take any action. Taking the first step, although it may not be perfect, will certainly be more useful to you than continuing to rework your plans. When you take that first step you might even change your original plans. If you want to go places in life you need to take action instead of sitting around making plans.

Staying Busy Doing Nothing

I really like this one. You can spend hours adjusting your website, scanning other blogs “doing research,” trying out new apps, and this takes a lot of time. Days go by where you pretend to be productive, sitting at your desk for hours, but basically accomplishing nothing. If this is what you’re spending your time doing, step back and ask where all this is going to lead. If you aren’t getting tangible results from all this effort, you need to be doing other things. Stop wasting time.

Listening to Others and NOT Yourself

If you’re venturing out trying something new it’s natural to seek advice. Everyone in the world has an opinion and is happy to give it. You ask and you listen. You think people know the answers if they’re so ready to speak up. You read everything you can get your hands on and just assume you need to do what you’re told or you’ll fail. The problem may be that you’re seeking too much advice from too many sources and you’re more confused now than ever. This can paralyze you. Trust yourself to filter out what you hear and read. Let your gut and your heart guide you. Trust that you will find the best way to proceed, and that you know enough to find out what is right for you.

Trying to Do It All on Your Own

You may think that it’s a sign of weakness to ask for help. Or it simply has not occurred to you to reach out and find someone to ask. You’re determined to make your own way. You actually construct an imaginary wall around yourself while you work to get your project off the ground. You need to STOP this now. Sit down and make a list of 3 things that you’re grappling with at the moment. Beside each item write down the name of one person who’s been through this struggle before. Think of one question you would like to ask them. Now simply reach out via email, text or phone and ask.

Thinking You Don’t Have what it Takes

Everyone is concerned that they don’t have what it takes. We all feel we could be smarter, thinner, prettier, and more accomplished. Plainly speaking, we all feel that we are simply not enough to achieve our goals. It doesn’t matter if it’s writing that great American novel, finding a wonderful relationship or even being loved. The truth is, no you’re not perfect and neither is anyone else. But you DO have what it takes nonetheless. We all do. Understand this simple fact and your fears will fade away. When you can accept this, there is nothing that can hinder or stand in your way anymore.

Great nuggets Demetri! I so get annoyed with people saying “the time is not right” Well, if it’s not right now, when will it ever be? LOL Until we decide that we can do something then the time an or our mindset will never be ready to have success. Thanks for the share!

I feel that was one of my biggest struggles- waiting for someone to give me the ‘permission’ to be great. I know we’re in business for ourselves but not by ourselves. But at the end of the day, we’re the boss!

I think we all suffer from these habits when we first start out in our online endeavors. It’s not until we get serious about making money online that we overcome these bad habits and start building productive habits. Great article Demetri!
